Ren and Stimpy is about a neurotic “asthma-hound” chihuahua named Ren Hoek, and a dumb cat (but at times smart) named Stimpson J. Cat. Together, they go on weird adventures. The show continues the adventures of the duo from the cult classic cartoon series, placing them in a completely No-Nickelodeon-Censorship universe.

Mad (stylized as MAD) is an American humor magazine founded in 1952 by editor Harvey Kurtzman and publisher William Gaines, launched as a comic book before it became a magazine. It was widely imitated and influential, affecting satirical media, as well as the cultural landscape of the 20th century, with editor Al Feldstein increasing readership to more than two million during its 1974 circulation peak. From 1952 until 2018, Mad published 550 regular issues, as well as hundreds of reprint “Specials”, original-material paperbacks, reprint compilation books and other print projects.

The magazine’s numbering reverted to 1 with its June 2018 issue, coinciding with the magazine’s headquarters move to the West Coast. In July 2019, it was widely reported that Mad would end its newsstand distribution after 67 years and be available only through the direct market and subscriptions. Future issues will primarily consist of reprinted material from the magazine’s archive.[6] Mad would ultimately satirize people’s beliefs that the magazine would actually come to an end in issue #11 (December 2019) as part of its “20 Dumbest People, Events, and Things of 2019” feature of that issue: As such, the magazine still would utilize a handful of archived content in future issues, while also retaining an amount of new content.

The Monkees is an American situation comedy that aired on NBC from 12 September 1966 to 25 March 1968. The series follows the adventures of four young men trying to make a name for themselves as rock ‘n roll singers. The show introduced a number of innovative new-wave film techniques to series television and won two Emmy Awards in 1967. Inspired by the burgeoning pop phenomena and armed with an advance from Columbia’s Screen Gems subsidiary, television producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider began auditions for a show about a struggling pop band in 1965. When existing acts, including the Lovin’ Spoonful, proved inappropriate, an advertisement in the daily showbiz paper Variety solicited 437 applications, including Stephen Stills, Danny Hutton (later of Three Dog Night) and Paul Williams. Following suitably off-beat auditions, the final choice paired two musicians – Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork – with two budding actors and former child stars – Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz.

On 12 September 1966, the first episode of The Monkees was aired by NBC-TV and, despite low initial ratings, the show quickly became hugely popular, a feat mirrored when it was launched in the UK. Attendant singles Last Train To Clarksville (US number 1) and I’m A Believer (US and UK number 1), and a million-selling debut album confirmed the band as the latest teenage phenomenon, drawing inevitable comparisons with the Beatles. However, news that the quartet did not play on their records fueled an already simmering internal controversy. Early sessions had been completed by Boyce And Hart, authors of Last Train To Clarksville, and their backing band, the Candy Store Prophets, with the Monkees simply overdubbing vocals. Musical supervision was later handed to Screen Gems executive Don Kirshner, who in turn called in staff songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King, Neil Diamond and Jeff Barry to contribute material for the show. This infuriated the Monkees’ two musicians, in particular Nesmith, who described the piecemeal More Of The Monkees as “the worst album in the history of the world”. Sales in excess of five million copies exacerbated tensions, but the band won tacit approval from Schneider to complete several tracks under their own devices.

An undeterred Kirshner coaxed Jones to sing on the already-completed backing track to A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You which was issued, without the band’s approval, as their third single. The ensuing altercation saw Kirshner ousted, with the quartet gaining complete artistic freedom. Although not issued as a single in the USA, Alternate Title (aka Randy Scouse Git), Dolenz’s ambitious paean to London, reached number 2 in Britain, while two further 1967 singles, Pleasant Valley Sunday and Daydream Believer (composed by John Stewart), achieved gold record status. Headquarters, the first Monkees album on which the band played, was a commercial and artistic success, consisting largely of self-penned material ranging from country rock to vaudevillian pop. Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. featured material drawn from associates Michael Murphy, Nilsson and Chip Martin as the unyielding call on the band’s talents continued. This creative drain was reflected in the disappointing The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees and its accompanying single, Valleri. The track itself had been recorded in 1966, and was only issued when pirate recordings, dubbed off-air from the television series, attracted considerable airplay. “The Monkees are dead!”, declared an enraged Nesmith, yet the song sold over a million copies, the band’s last such success.

The appeal of their series had waned as plots grew increasingly loose, and the final episode was screened in the USA on 25 March 1968. The quartet had meanwhile embarked on a feature movie, Head, which contained many in-jokes about their artistic predicaments. Although baffling their one-time teenage audience, it failed to find favor with the underground circuit who still viewed the Monkees as bubblegum. However, Head has since been rightly lauded for its imagination and innovation. A dispirited Peter Tork left following its release, but although the remaining trio continued without him, their commercial decline was as spectacular as its ascendancy. Nesmith left for a solo career in 1969, and the following year the Monkees name was dissolved in the wake of Dolenz/Jones recording Changes. However, in 1975, the latter-day duo joined their erstwhile songwriting team in Dolenz, Jones, Boyce And Hart which toured under the banner “The Great Golden Hits Of The Monkees Show”.

The project drew only cursory interest, but the band’s reputation was bolstered considerably during the 80s, when the independent Rhino Records label reissued the entire Monkees back catalog and the entire series was re-screened on MTV. Although Nesmith demurred, Dolenz, Jones and Tork embarked on a highly successful, 20th anniversary world tour which engendered a live album and a new studio set, Pool It!. They then disbanded as members pursued contrasting interests, while attempts to create the New Monkees around Marty Roos, Larry Saltis, Jared Chandler and Dino Kovas in 1987 were aborted. Although reviled by many contemporary critics, the original band’s work is now regarded as among the best American pop of its era. Rhino Records released an ambitious 21-volume video collection in 1995 containing all 58 episodes of their television series. The following year’s Justus was the first recording by the original band (including Nesmith) for over 20 years, and was followed by their first tour of the UK as a quartet.

Watchmen is a twelve-issue comic book limited series created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. The series was published by DC Comics during 1986 and 1987, and has been subsequently reprinted in collected form. Watchmen originated from a story proposal Moore submitted to DC featuring superhero characters that the company had acquired from Charlton Comics. Muppet Babies was a very successful cartoon series in its own right. This show basically featured Jim Henson’s famous Muppets as babies. Each episode, each of the Muppet Babies had adventures that their imaginations take them on. Often however, their imaginations would sometimes get the better of them, all for comic effect. The featured Muppets were Baby Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Rowlf, Animal, Scooter, and a new character, Skeeter, Scooter’s look-alike sister. Occasionally they had visits from Baby Bunsen and Beaker, and even Statler and Waldorf came to visit, and later we see a recurring appearance by a “baby” version of Bean Bunny from Tale of the Bunny Picnic. The moral glue that held these Muppets together was Nanny (voiced by Barbara Billingsley of Leave it to Beaver fame), a character whose body was only shown from the waist down and we all remember the green striped socks…

Yu Yu Hakusho. “Ghost Files” or “Poltergeist Report”, also known as Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi. The series tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who is struck and killed by a car while attempting to save a child’s life. After a number of tests presented to him by Koenma, the son of the ruler of the afterlife Underworld, Yusuke is revived and appointed the title of “Underworld Detective”, with which he must investigate various cases involving demons and apparitions in the human world. The manga becomes more focused on martial arts battles and tournaments as it progresses. Togashi began creating Yu Yu Hakusho around November 1990, basing the series on his interests in the occult and horror films and an influence of Buddhist mythology.

Yu Yu Hakusho follows Yusuke Urameshi, a street-brawling delinquent who, in an uncharacteristic act of altruism, is hit by a car and killed in an attempt to save a young boy by pushing him out of the way. His ghost is greeted by Botan, a woman who introduces herself as the pilot of the River Styx, who ferries souls to the “Underworld” or Spirit World where they may be judged for the afterlife. Botan informs Yusuke that his act had caught even the Underworld by surprise and that there was not yet a place made for him in either heaven or hell. Thus Koenma, son of the Underworld’s ruler King Enma, offers Yusuke a chance to return to his body through a series of tests. Yusuke succeeds with the help of his friends Keiko Yukimura and Kazuma Kuwabara. After returning to life, Koenma grants Yusuke the title of “Underworld Detective”. “Spirit World Detective”, charging him with investigating supernatural activity within the Human World. Soon Yusuke is off on his first case, retrieving three treasures stolen from the Underworld by a gang of demons: Hiei, Kurama and Goki. Yusuke collects the three treasures with the aid of his new technique, the “Rei Gun”, a shot of aura or Reiki, “Spirit Energy” fired mentally from his index finger. He then travels to the mountains in search of the aged, female martial arts master Genkai. Together with his rival Kuwabara, Yusuke fights through a tournament organized by Genkai to find her successor. Yusuke uses the competition as a cover to search for Rando, a demon who steals the techniques of martial arts masters and kills them. Yusuke defeats Rando in the final round of the tournament and trains with Genkai for several months, gaining more mastery over his aura. Yusuke is then sent to Maze Castle in the Demon Plane. “Demon World”, a third world occupied solely by demons, where Kuwabara and the newly reformed Kurama and Hiei assist him in defeating the Four Beasts, a quartet of demons attempting to blackmail Koenma into removing the barrier keeping them out of the human world.

Yusuke’s next case sends him on a rescue mission, where he meets Toguro, a human turned into a demon. In order to test his strength, Toguro invites Yusuke to the Dark Tournament Ankoku Bujutsukai, “Dark Martial Arts Association”, an event put on by corrupt, rich humans in which teams of demons, and occasionally humans, fight fierce battles for the chance to receive any wish they desire. Team Urameshi, consisting of Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei and a disguised Genkai, traverse through the strenuous early rounds to face Team Toguro in the finals and win the tournament. They learn that Team Toguro’s owner, Sakyo, was attempting to win in order to create a large hole from the human world to the Demon Plane and allow countless demons through. With his loss, Sakyo destroys the tournament arena, killing himself in the process.

After the tournament, Yusuke returns home, but has little time to rest as he is challenged to a fight by three teenagers possessing superhuman powers and who end up taking the detective hostage. Kuwabara and the others rescue him and learn that the whole scenario was a test put on by Genkai. It is disclosed that Shinobu Sensui, Yusuke’s predecessor as Underworld Detective, has recruited six other powerful beings to help him take over where Sakyo left off, opening a hole to the Demon Plane in order to cause genocide of the human race. Yusuke and his friends challenge and defeat Sensui’s associates one-by-one, culminating in a final battle between the two detectives. Sensui kills Yusuke then retreats into the newly opened portal to the Demon Plane. Yusuke is reborn as a partial demon, discovering that his ancestor passed down a recessive gene that would hide until an heir with sufficient power surfaced, when his demonic lineage would be revealed. Yusuke travels to the Demon Plane and defeats Sensui with the aid of the spirit of his ancestor who takes control of Yusuke’s body to finish the fight.

As they return to the human world, Yusuke is stripped of his detective title as King Enma orders he be captured and executed in fear that Yusuke’s demon blood could cause him to go on a rampage in the human world. Yusuke, unsettled at having been controlled by his ancestor Raizen, accepts an offer by Raizen’s followers to return to the Demon Plane. Raizen, desiring a successor to his territory, is on the brink of dying of starvation, a death that would topple the delicate political balance of the three ruling powers of the Demon Plane. Hiei and Kurama are summoned by the other two rulers, Mukuro and Yomi, respectively, to prepare for an inevitable war. The three protagonists train in the realm for one year, during which time Raizen dies and Yusuke inherits his territory. Yusuke takes initiative and proposes a fighting tournament to name the true ruler of the Demon Plane, which is agreed upon by Mukuro and Yomi. During the tournament, Yusuke and Yomi meet in the second elimination round where Yusuke is defeated and knocked unconscious. Yusuke awakens days later to find that the tournament has ended and that a similar competition is to be held every so often to determine the Demon Plane’s ruler. Yusuke stays in the Demon Plane for a while longer, but eventually returns to the human world to be with Keiko.
