The Beauty of Maps (Seeing the Art in Cartography) is yet another example of a BBC television series which focuses on matters concerning data visualization. It is another proof how visualization is becoming an interesting feature in popular press. We love maps. And we love data visualization, of which maps are among the earliest and most ubiquitous examples.

As location continues to tickle the tips of trend analysts’ tongues and location-based applications take over the mobile landscape, it’s interesting – if not necessary – to understand the historical context of our relationship with location and geography.

1. Medieval Maps – Mapping the Medieval Mind. The Hereford Mappa Mundi is the largest intact Medieval wall map in the world and its ambition is breathtaking – to picture all of human knowledge in a single image. The work of a team of artists, the world it portrays is overflowing with life, featuring Classical and Biblical history, contemporary buildings and events, animals and plants from across the globe, and the infamous ‘monstrous races’ which were believed to inhabit the remotest corners of the Earth.

2. City Maps – Order out of Chaos. The British Library is home to a staggering 4.5 million maps, most of which remain hidden away in its colossal basement, and the programme delves behind the scenes to explore some amazing treasures in more detail. This is the story of three maps, three ‘visions’ of London over three centuries; visions of beauty that celebrate but also distort the truth. It’s the story of how urban maps try to impose order on chaos.

3. Atlas Maps – Thinking Big. The Dutch Golden Age saw map-making reach a fever pitch of creative and commercial ambition. This was the era of the first ever atlases – elaborate, lavish and beautiful. This was the great age of discovery and marked an unprecedented opportunity for mapmakers, who sought to record and categorize the newly acquired knowledge of the world.

4. Cartoon Maps – Politics and Satire. The series concludes by delving into the world of satirical maps. How did maps take on a new form, not as geographical tools, but as devices for humor, satire or storytelling? Graphic artist Fred Rose perfectly captured the public mood in 1880 with his general election maps featuring Gladstone and Disraeli, using the maps to comment upon crucial election issues still familiar to us today. Technology was on the satirist’s side, with the advent of high-speed printing allowing for larger runs at lower cost.

This is a concert with documentary inserts between songs set next to the Pompeii volcano. This is one if not the best musical performance by the Floyd. The set up and background provides an eerie/mysterious feel to it that is amplified by intense tracks such as “Careful with that Axe Eugene.” Panned views of the volcano and computer generated graphics add to the effects. It unlike any other concert they have played in being that the only fans were those involved in the setup and movie creation. Songs like “One of These Days” provide an up-tempo song that highlights the drummer’s capabilities. While the classic “Us and Them” shows their more mellow jazz oriented style. Extremely well produced a must see for any true Floyd fan.

They can get dinosaurs to walk again, fanged monsters to leap out into your living room and David Attenborough to appear on Sky. All of the above miracles happened in the delightful David Attenborough’s Natural History Museum Alive…

This superficially aped the antics of the great communicator’s BBC documentaries: avuncular chap in short sleeves explains the habits of a species with a live specimen doing its thing right there in the same shot. You know, like the gorillas. The difference was that all the animals here were animations: extinct fossils domiciled in the great Victorian treasure house and brought to life by the genius of CGI.

Somewhere between Walking with Dinosaurs and Night at the Museum, this was natural history pitched at the child in all of us. Attenborough dodged a commissionaire locking up for the night and, as he wandered alone among the museum’s contents, bones became flesh (3D flesh if you have the right sort of TV). We met a vast eagle, a putative yeti, a 30-foot snake and sundry saurians. Almost everything was unimaginably massive, including the famous diplodocus whose flicking tail rudely damaged the museum’s grand stairwell.

Inspired by the Snurfer, a surfboard-inspired strip of wood, Jake created his first snowboard in 1977 as an inexpensive alternative to skiing. From there, he developed increasingly versatile boards while encouraging ski resorts, sponsors, and world-class athletes to take up what the media dubbed “the worst new sport.” By the late 1990s, Jake’s vision had catapulted the punk-infused culture of snowboarding into the mainstream and onto the world stage. But as Jake and his eponymous company, Burton, thrived in the new century, the entrepreneur battled two very serious health problems: Miller Fisher Syndrome, a rare nerve disorder, as well as cancer, which ultimately claimed his life in 2019. Exploring the Americas

Over the course of the first three Photographing the World tutorials, Elia has explored some of the most beautiful locations in the world including Iceland, New Zealand, Italy, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Dubai, and Singapore. For the Photographing the World 4 photography tutorial, we wanted to visit new locations that both Elia and the Fstoppers crew had never explored before. In this advanced landscape photography tutorial , we are excited to be traveling throughout the western deserts of the United States and the mountains of Patagonia in Chile and Argentina.

This adventure begins in North America where we explore some of the most beautiful natural wonders of the western United States. Even though Elia Locardi grew up in the United States, he spends most of his time working internationally and has actually done very little travel through the states. So as he explores these beautiful locations throughout Nevada, Utah, and Arizona, you will be able to learn how Elia scouts and sets up his photographs in areas he’s visiting and seeing for the first time. Some of the locations included in this first half of the tutorial include Horseshoe Bend, Mesa Arch, Thor’s Hammer, Angel’s Landing, and Monument Valley. Even though this tutorial is focused on advanced landscape photography and advanced landscape photography post-processing and editing, Elia spends time during one lesson to break away from the landscape theme in order to demonstrate how he tackles one of the most extravagant cityscapes in the world: the Las Vegas strip.

After traveling through western US, Elia changes both landscapes and seasons entirely and flies down to South America. From Santiago, Chile, the crew travels to the the southernmost part of Patagonia to photograph the rugged terrain within Torres del Paine National Park. Here Elia is faced with some of the harshest winds and changing weather conditions he has ever faced during the Photographing the World tutorial production. After photographing the epic mountains within Chile, Elia continues the travel to Argentina as he photographs the grand Fitz Roy mountain in El Chaltén. The journey eventually wraps up back in Chile in the volcano filled countryside of Conguillío National Park.

On Location Lessons

What makes the Photographing the World series so different from other landscape photography tutorials is you get to watch Elia work on location as he faces the unique challenges that each scene offers. Throughout the course of this adventure, Elia will explore 15 completely different shooting environments and explain what is and isn’t working for his process and style. Sometimes common challenges present themselves like dealing with poor weather or less than ideal lighting. Other times Elia is faced with unforeseen issues like excessive tourists, moon light, traffic, intense wind, or nearby light pollution. Unlike other lessons in this series, every one of these locations is completely new to Elia which gives you the chance to watch an experienced landscape photographer tackle all of these unique situations for the first time ever, and walk you through the entire process.

Throughout Photographing the World, Elia explores new topics and shooting techniques that he has either never shared or that he has perfected over the years. Some of these topics include working with tilt shift lenses to reduce converging vertical lines, creating unique shift panos while also blending moments of time, blending multiple frames from slightly different camera positions to create perspective blended photos, and capturing extreme weather conditions in order to help reveal hidden elements within your scene. In the before and after example below, Elia also teaches how to create seamless multi panel panoramic images with exposures that are not perfectly matched.

Fans of the Photographing the World series love watching Elia work through each photograph live on location, but perhaps the most valuable part of this series actually takes place long after the images have been captured out in the field. Elia Locardi is an internationally acclaimed professional travel photographer, Fujifilm Global Ambassador, writer, public speaker and highly experienced educator who spends his life shooting some of the most beautiful locations in the world. Learn Photography On Location

As with every tutorial in the Photographing the World series, Elia takes you across the globe and shares with you the real world shooting situations he deals with out in the field. Each lesson begins with an in depth exploration of the location being photographed. Once you have captured the files out on location, only half of the process is complete. Elia then takes you into the post production studio and shares all of the intricate steps he takes to turn his images from a perfectly captured snapshot into a world class piece of art. It is here that you will learn how Elia pulls the most out of his raw files and how to adjust color and tonality so your images pop off the screen. As with all of our tutorials, Photographing the World III starts of pretty simple but quickly builds up in complexity. As a forewarning, if you are not proficient in Photoshop you might want to start with Elia’s most basic tutorial Photographing the World: Landscapes. In this tutorial, some of the topics covered are advanced panoramic stitching, creating illuminosity masks from scratch, replacing skies in complex scenes, advanced time blending, difficult object removal, and building Photoshop actions to help speed up your workflow.

Unlike previous tutorials where Elia has used 3rd party plugins to achieve his signature look, in Photographing the World 3 everything is done entirely with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. This film plays out in Ukraine on a single day: March 14, 2022, the 2,944th day of the Russian-Ukrainian War. In the last few weeks, intense warfare has surreally mixed places and people and created a post-apocalyptic dimension revealing new qualities and roles. Thousands of Kyivans have moved to live in subway stations. The capital city’s previously calm suburbs have been transformed into battle zones of destruction and looting by Russian occupiers. People no longer live according to “workdays” or “weekends,” counting instead the number of days since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine… The film presents this day in the lives of a pop music star, video engineer, historian, art restorer, polar researcher, and pensioner, who were all forced to radically change their lives.

He was eight years old when he decided to become a pilot. It wasn’t a tough decision — his grandfather was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and 11 air medals as a fighter pilot in the Second World War. As far as John was concerned, his grandfather had won the war all by himself in his beautiful blue Corsair. His grandfather was a hero and he intended to follow in his footsteps.

At Red Flag, the international training exercise for the air forces of allied countries, hundreds of pilots meet for the most challenging flying of their careers. Red Flag is the final tune-up training for pilots and their crews before being sent into actual combat. The object is to make the exercises as real and challenging as possible — to take the pilots, ground crews, mechanics, rescue personnel, etc., to the limits of what they can handle.

We follow our young pilot as he makes his way through this extraordinary event held in the desert of Nevada. He is amazed at how complex, confusing and dangerous the exercises are.

He also begins to notice team members who were absent from his childhood vision of heroism. There are people who work all night rebuilding engines and re-installing them into his aircraft so he can keep flying and training. There are people who rise at four-thirty each morning to scour the runways for tiny pebbles that can get sucked into engines and kill pilots. There are people who practice rushing into a flaming mockup of a crashed aircraft so if there is a real accident they will be ready to save the pilot. In the flying exercises, John realizes there are other pilots who aren’t just out to prove themselves — they are helping him — watching his back, taking personal risks to cover his mistakes. And he is doing the same for them.

He begins to think that being a hero is not quite as simple as he once believed. Captain John Stratton has gone on from Red Flag to serve three combat tours over Afghanistan and Iraq. Although he has seen much sacrifice and courage from other fighter pilots during his years in the Air Force, the extraordinary people he remembers are not just the pilots, but the whole team supporting from the ground as well as the entire USAF Air and Space Force.

Now, as Stratton reflects from the cockpit of his F-15, squinting out into the evening light across the vast blue sky, his wingman aboard an F-15 Eagle vanishes for a moment, and in his imagination another aircraft flies beside him. Along with other hacktivist groups like Telecomix, they’ve launched cyber attacks against foreign governments in support of the Arab Spring. They served as tech support for the Occupy movement and have put their mark on countless uprisings around the world. One participant described their protests as “ultra coordinated motherfuckery.”

So who is Anonymous?

They’ve been called criminals, “hackers on steroids” and even terrorists. But the vast majority of those who identify as Anonymous don’t break the law. They see themselves as activists and protectors of free speech, and tend to rise up most powerfully when they perceive a threat to internet freedom or personal privacy. Whether you are a soccer mom or a member of Congress, you live in an electronic landscape that has exploded with largely unchecked intrusion and surveillance. You are tracked by government databases while corporate advertisers are looking to buy your personal data for pennies. In this landscape, the existence of the collective internet culture called Anonymous makes the case for anonymity.

Using tools of disruption and spectacle, they have also become the face of dissent for a variety of human rights and information freedom groups around the globe. They are a legion of loud but largely masked geeks, hackers, pranksters and outraged citizens who have unwittingly redefined civil disobedience for the digital age, and found themselves in the middle of one of the most important battles of our time.
